Parent Mentors provide a variety of
services. Some of these include:
 | Accompanying Ohio Regional Infant Hearing Program personnel
and Early Intervention Specialists on Home visits, when invited |
 | Providing support and comfort to families |
 | Sharing experiences about rearing a child who is deaf
or hard of hearing |
 | Providing tips and suggestions for incorporating the
"auditory lifestyle" into individual family styles and schedules |
 | Suggesting tips and techniques for integrating auditory
enrichment and auditory communication into everyday activities and
routines |
 | Providing information about acoustic management of the
home, and setting up the home as an optimal listening environment |
 | All suggestions, tips, and examples spring from the
parent mentors' own personal experiences. |
Additional information about our Parent
Mentors include:
 |
The project provides free parent mentor services
from one oral deaf adult and 11 parents located around the state. All
of these people have lived and breathed the "auditory lifestyle".
|
 |
Our parent mentor network consists of mothers and
fathers who can share first-hand experiences, provide information, and
give comfort and support. |
 |
The children of the parent mentors range from
pre-school to college age. |
 |
Parent mentors from the Auditory-Options Project are
available at any location in Ohio. |
 |
Visits with parent mentors can be arranged for evenings
and weekends to accommodate each family's schedule. |
How to connect with a Parent Mentor:
 | The initial contact should be made through your
Regional Infant Hearing Program (RIHP) parent advisor, outreach
specialist, service coordinator, project director/coordinator, etc.
|
 | After the initial visit, arrangements for additional
visits with parent mentors can be made by contacting your RIHP
representative, contacting the parent mentor directly, or contacting any
of the Auditory-Options Project staff.
